I love me a good ol pulled pork or chicken.
Anything I can throw in the slow cooker in the morning and leave to cook while I go to work is right by me! It also helps that it is husband approved, and leaves us both enough leftovers for quite a few lunches.
I wanted to share with you all, my favourite pulled pork recipe. Over the years I have used a lot of store bought packages, spice mixes etc but they were never quite right. They also traditionally had a lot of sugar, salt, and additives in it. I decided that I wanted to perfect the recipe with items that are easily always in my cupboard, low in salt, low in sugar and as little additives as possible.
While searching for low sodium items for a client one day, I stumbled upon Uncle Dougie’s BBQ and wing sauces. Uncle Dougie’s reports it is a no crap product that is small-batch, handcrafted quality with no cheap corporate shortcuts. They are 100% natural, gluten, and GMO-free with no high fructose corn syrup, MSG or preservatives.
The ingredient list is what surprised me: Tomato Paste made from Red Ripe California Tomatoes, Sweet Red Peppers, Distilled Malt Vinegar, Sweet Bell Peppers, Fresh Ground Black Pepper, Pure Honey, Distilled Vinegar, Garlic, Onion, Paprika, Parsley, Salt, Cayenne Peppers, Filtered Water, Brown Sugar, Natural Maple Flavor, Natural Hickory Flavor, Xanthan Gum (100% Natural – No Preservatives). Salt and sugar are both pretty low on the ingredient list.
With only 140mg of sodium per 1 tbsp and 7g sugar, that’s 2520mg of sodium per this whole recipe and with about 10 servings per sauce mix that’s only 252mg of sodium per sauce serving.
Okay, so here it is!
Depending on how many people you are serving will depend on how much pork tenderloin you buy and thus how much of the sauce mix you will use. I start by cutting my pork tenderloin into chunks ( I find this helps with the shredding process in the end). I then mix the sauce mix together in a small bowl with a whisk.
Place your chunked pork tenderloin into your slow cooker, top and mix with sauce mixture. Cover and place on low for 4-6 hours. You will notice there is additional liquid in the slow cooker once complete, that’s okay! It adds moisture once the pork is shredded.
Once cooked take chunks of pork out of the slow cooker and place on cutting board. Use two forks to shred until completely shredded. Place shredded pork back into slow cooker with sauce and mix. Let sit for 15 minutes.
Top buns with pulled pork mixture and add a desirred amount of mozzarella cheese on top.

- 1 bottle of Uncle Dougie’s Sweet and Snappy BBQ Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Onion Powder
- 1 Tbsp Onion Flakes
- 1 Tbsp Garlic Powder
- 2 Tsp Smoked Paprika
- 1 tsp Parsley
- 1 tsp Oregano
- 1 tsp dried basil
- 1 Tsp pepper
- Kaiser or Ciabatta buns
- Mozzarella cheese
