Have you ever thought about your food rules?

These are the rules you likely subconsciously follow throughout the day such as:

  • “no eating after 8:00pm”
  • “x food is good while y food is bad”
  • “vegetables are safe”
  • “3 meals, 2 snacks daily”
  • “no snacks”
  • “chips are my downfall, I can’t control my intake so I avoid them at all costs”
  • “only salads for lunch”
  • “no carbs”

This list goes on and on for most people and often people don’t even recognize that they have food rules. It’s become so normal in their daily life that they didn’t even know they were following them.

So, where did we get all these food rules?

Years of living with the diet mentality, that’s where! There isn’t a celebrity or magazine out there that at one point or another hasn’t tried to sell you on the perfect diet, or the one “rule” to follow to eliminate belly fat, slim your thighs, reduce cellulite etc. Unfortunately, these tips and tricks don’t actually work and what the celebrities forget to mention is that they have a chef or a delivered meal service and work out 3+ hours a day and that’s why they have flat bellies, no their silly rule.

So, what are we left with? Food rules that don’t always make sense… and a lot of them!

This why becoming a mindful, intuitive eater is so important. It’s no longer following rules that don’t work, but learning to listen to your body. Despite what we may believe, your body will tell you exactly what it needs and wants and it will regulate your weight and energy accordingly. Becoming an intuitive eater is no simple task, it’s full of ups and downs and sometimes we need someone to help us along the process and guide us as to where we need to go next.

If you’re sick of food rules, counting points, calories, carbs, fat and always feeling defeated, like a diet failure… come chat with me about becoming an intuitive eater.

You’ll leave following the only three food rules I myself follow.

  • The only foods I don’t eat are the foods I don’t like.
  • I eat when I am truly hungry.
  • I stop eating when I am full.

Interested in starting today?

I challenge you to sit down and write out your list of food rules. Do you have rules around the times of day you are allowed to eat? What about rules around beverages? Fried Foods? Sweets? Eating Out? Snacks?

Once you have your list, I want you to think about where those rules came from, why you follow them and if they provide any benefit to your life. I challenge you to stop eating according to your rules and start to listen to your body.
